STEM in Second Grade

Second graders aren't letting the snow and cold stop them from having fun!  STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) continues to be one of our favorite things to do.  To start off STEM in 2019, we listened to a story called The Biggest Snowman (and identified many story elements: Beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, plot, etc).  The challenge in the story was to build the biggest snowman.  Students received the same challenge but rather than snow, they received 3 different sized marshmallows and toothpicks.  Split into 4 groups students led themselves through designing, drawing, building (and rebuilding and trying again) the tallest snowman!  It is amazing to watch them lead themselves and talk through problem solving and engineering!  Way to go second graders!  Keep up the great thinking!
