Newsies! High School Rocks the Stage!

Did you know the high school's play Newsies was really cool? It was about kids a long time ago who sold newspapers to make money. They had to pay a small amount to get the newspapers to sell. Then the price they had to pay went up! So, the newsies went on strike until the price went back down. The actors were really good at singing and dancing and they had these awesome New York accents! We got to learn even more about the Newsies play by talking to the directors Mrs. Elia and Ms. Closser! Ms. Closser told us all about how she did the choreography and all the dance moves. She said it was super fun to teach the actors how to do the steps and they worked really hard to make it look amazing! We also talked to Mrs. Elia and she told us about picking Newsies because it had great music and a really important story. When they chose Newsies, they looked at lots of different plays to find one that the students would really enjoy being a part of. They also shared how important the backstage crew is to make the play work.

Today the Newsies' own Davey was in town! I was able to catch up with him and asked him a few questions. Davey was played by Richard Osborne. He is a junior. Other plays he has been in are “Tarzan”,” Little Mermaid”, and “Back to the 80’s”. Richard would like to do the play next year. His favorite part of the play was the singing. He says the hardest part was the tap dancing. His favorite part of the set was the big platforms. He hopes the play next year will be “Little Shop of Horrors”. I loved meeting him!

Today I caught up with the sound director, Tim of The Newsies. Tim's favorite part was the whole thing. The play he hopes they do next year is “Footloose”. His favorite song was seize the day. The hardest part of the sound was running 24 microphones at once. He does all the stuff you hear out of the speaker. He will do the sound next year. Other sound events he does are the dances here, graduations, and weddings. His job at the school is facilities(maintenance).
